Breeding Frontosa in a 90 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So what would you all suggest in terms of type of frontosa and size. I would like to have them breed within a year or so if they "feel like it".

If you want breeding in less than a year, you need to be shopping for an adult breeding group.Wild caught if you got the cash.

I would try a trio of Kipli or mpimbwe. wild caught. they are the most prolific and mild tempered. Again, it is a gamble with such a small group and tank. The male very well may decide to kill the female. colder temp like 75 degrees will help with aggression and breeding. dont really need a bunch of hiding places, a couple flower pots will help but too many rocks will sometimes cause eye damage if being chased. My WC never use caves

Just wondering - How manny would fit in a 6 foot 120G?

I have been keeping fronts for awhile now and have only seen people getting frowned upon for keeping fronts in a four foot tank. adult fronts breeding size fronts are atleast six or seven inches and fronts are notorious for darting in any direction at sudden movement. They're skiddish and a four foot tank dont give them enough time to stop. I have 5 mpimbwes in a 240 and they still go flying into the acrylic if i move too fast around them. I would not recommend it but it could be done...

That being said, I was talking to a friend of mine who has been in the hobby for a long time and he has had successful spawns in a tank that size tho i would do 1m/3f or maybe even 1m/2f. at four inches could be another year plus for them to breed and in two years maybe three you will need a bigger tank.

check out frontosa.com if you are serious bout trying to breed

oh and good luck ;)

Let me ask this... Would it be better to breed flowerhorns or green terrors instead?

I had no idea frontosa were skiddish. I'm not sure housing a 14" skiddish fish in a 90 is a good idea.

most breeding size adults are 7-8 inches for males and 5-6 for females if you buy wildcaught. yes they can be skiddish and bang into tank walls if suprised by sudden movements. Even in a long tank they will do that. It would take years and years to get 14 inches

I was exaggerating.. Either way... Would it be wiser to breed green terrors/flowerhorns, or maybe even throw out the whole breeding idea and have a multi fish tank. What fish would live well with 1 or 2 female fronts?

I have a four inch Frontosa started swimming like it has an air blatter issue.....kinda weaves back and forth......acts like it wants to swim vertical......raised this fish from 3/4 of an inch.....any ideas?.....I put some aquarium salt in just in case its got bloat.....
