Breeding Ghost shrimp?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought about breeding ghost shrimp for food in my main tank. I got the idea when i brought home 2 dozen from my lfs and gound 4-5 of them with green things under them. after looking at them closer i realized they were prego so I put 4
(2 prego, 2 non) ghost shrimp into a 2.5g tank that has 1 molly fry (~1/4"). after a few weeks i noticed that non were prego anymore and that one was eaten so i added 4 more about a month ago (7 GS total) I changed out the gravel yeseterday and found 9 shrimp out. Looks like 2 babys managed to survive. I'm hoping that will happen again and the population will grow, even tho i added (2) 1/2" albino corys and (2) 3/4" blue rams. The molly fry is about 5-6mo and is about 3/8"

With ghost shrimp it is better to keep them in a tank that only has one source of light, ie black out the side or bucket as recommended earlier. Also remove the adults after the eggs have been deposited, and feed them off. If you supply enough algae, and fry food, you will have hundreds.

Put them in a rubbermaid with a pile of javaMOSS. leave them alone and they will reproduce.

Get on ReefCentral.com and post a question in the breeder forum about a basic overview on srimp breeding, a lot of info can be borrowed from salt water, besides how much salt to add. They generally have a lot more solid information.
