Anyone know anything about breeding and raising ghost shrimp for food. I recently was able to purchase 500 and would like to try and breed them as a cheap source of food for some of my fish.

55 gallon tank, bright lights, more java moss than you know what to do with, and lots of duckweed, or another floating plant. No heater.

yeah no heater, stay in a COOOL place, make sure you add a little salt i think it helps them shed or something... but I work at a pet store and we sell lots of those things every week. my eels and acellas puffer love to crunch em. we keep them in a 10 gal tank, you could probably fit thousands in a 55gal... but if you want them to breed like mad go at least a 30. and seriously they die wicked quick if theres no salt or it gets too warm. and plenty of water changes!!! good luck

I had problems with mine when I added salt, good thing I used a small batch to test it on. Just FYI a shop in tacoma has a 55 gal. ghost shrimp tank, and when I was there they were restocking the tank, and dropped at least 14 bags with 250 in each.

Im am also trying too breed ghost shrimp, i have about 3-4 dozen in a 30gal im about too put them in a 10gal ...they seem too be doing well but lately ive seen a few dead ones here and there, dont know whats going on there but i do have 4 pregenent ghost shrimp which i moved into a breeders net thing and im about two weeks into this...i have no heater, no real plants and haven't used salt...

no heaters huh? i have a box of 800 commin in this week and i am useing a 55gal tank with lots of java moss, but they are for feeders not trying to breed them.

You will find it very difficult to breed ghost shrimp without plants, as the adults will lay eggs, and turn around and eat them. The more plants you have the higher chance the babies will have to survive.
