Just a story...

At a fish store i worked for we got some of these guys in from a local breeder of them. a few days later we were getting calls from MR. Glofish himself (ceo of the company). they said they had an employee in there looking at fish and noticed we had some illegal glofish for sale. He said they knew they were not this seasons glo fish because of the line pattern on the fish 0.o! anyways i told him the "fish guy" want in that day and to talk to him he have to call him back. dont know much after that.

just got me wondering if they really do have spys going around the country looking for ilegal fish ahaha. and as far as i know you not alowd to breed or sell them at all. ill check more on this tomorow just have to make a call.

As mentioned previously, you cannot patent an animal… only the name…

They did their best to sterilize all of them that were released, but a few slipped through the cracks and breeding lines were made…

I’m sure the owner of the name GloFish who is also the creator of the fish, would like for everyone to think it is illegal to breed them… or to sell them… and it doesn’t surprise me he is suggesting such is true… but it simply isn’t…

I highly doubt that he has spies he pays to go around, but it is likely he has friends and associates in the industry who visit local fish stores. I mean, you are in Tampa, Florida… and there are more fish farms in Florida than the rest of the country combined…

I see his side. I’m sure he paid a lot of money to establish the business he has… and I’m sure he is a rich man because of it… If I made millions off of his hard work while he ate out of a dumpster I’d feel like a thief. But since he is living like a fat cat, I don’t think we should feel bad for breeding a few…

I hope you guys don’t give in to his strong armed tactics…

Wow... while I still have questions as to what actual limitations this puts on the fish...

It does appear that it is patented as an invention...

I'll poke around this a bit more tomorrow... but for the time being, I'll admit I stand corrected...

Thanks for puttin in the research Sostoudt....

I find it funny that so much fuss is put up over such a small little insignificant fish. I mean seriosuly glowfish are so small that my oscar could eat 30 and still not be satisfied.

Arent they all glo fish sterile zebra danios? I would think the originators would want to keep the market, for a while. Then allow everyone else to cash in.
they tried to make most sterile but ive heard of one or two people with pregnant ones.

you maybe able to breed them with regular danios. not sure if they attempted to sterilized both male and females or just one sex.

The store I work in regularly gets offers to buy them from wholesalers under different names- "Neon danios," "Blacklight Danios," "Glowing Danios," etc. . . and the wholesale cost on them is about 1/10 the wholesale cost of Glo-Fish danios. I've also seen these danios for sale in numerous stores below the cost of what suppliers charge for them and the difference was that they weren't labeled Glo-Fish, but other names.

Certainly makes me think it's only illegal to sell them under the name Glo-Fish. If nation-wide wholesalers offer them below cost and under different names, they'd pretty much HAVE to be legal. I can't see huge wholesalers like that slipping through the cracks when all it takes is for one price list to be forwarded to the Glo-Fish company and they'd be screwed.

glofish are a genetically modified danio and yes they are easily bred by different people but there is a patent on them so you can breed them but cannot legally sell them
