Oscars do fine with gt's aswell as long as you have proper filtering

If he wants to have 2 green terrors plus one other cichlid like a jack dempsey, I feel that adding an oscar to that mix would be overkill. It would take a massive amount of filtration and water changes to keep that tank clean.

So I think I've decided to have my dither fish be 2-3 cobalts and 203 yellow labs. What do you think? Is there anything else I could put in the tank? I would love to have pictus cats, but I have a feeling they will eat the eggs =p.

When your terrors spawn they will be all over the pictus.

If you are going to add mbuna you should make sure they have some hiding places.

so if its between blue cobalts+yellow labs and rainbows... which would be better as dithers for gt's?

I would go with the cobalts. They should be less costly for you to get your hands on. Remember your gt's won't likely be able to hurt your dithers but in the off chance that they do, it is better to lose relatively cheap fish like a cobalt cichlid. I wouldnt use electric yellows as dithers unless I had a large surplus of them on hand.

So I would go with cobalts along with a schooling type fish. Just make sure the mbuna are around half the size of your gt's. That would make them too large to eat and but not big enought to pose a threat to your terrors.

cool. so 2-3 cobalts and maybe some silver dollars/giant danios/convicts?

In my opinion it is either or on the convicts and mbuna. So either convicts with some schooling fish or the mbuna with some schooling fish.
