Breeding guppies...do they sell?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You would probably get a bigger return in $$ if you got some dwarf cichilds rather than live bearers. If you go with live bearers, get some N class endlers.

Are n class endlers hard to find at a LFS?

Anything on aquabid would probably be too expensive to ship and none of the LFS's near me sells high quality guppies, so no guppies for me

Can you make money breeding/selling guppies?
Yes, you can, but probably not!
There are hundreds of recognized strains of guppies. If you buy a popular strain and have the breeding skill to maintain and improve it you can expect to sell a trio for $20 to $40.
IFGA (International Fancy Guppy Assoc) is an American guppy assoc that has a standard that calls for large gupps with large fins. Asian guppies are smaller bodied with different fin types. A truebreeding strain of IFGA or Asian guppies could net you a little money.
However, guppy genetics are highly unstable. Many "strains" do not breed true and produce types unlike the parents. Non-truebreeding, hybred, wild type and pet store quality guppies are worth less than 50 cents each. As others have said, you can't sell them for the cost of production.
I've kept fancy gupps for 13 years. Maintain 15 true breeding strains in 73 tanks. I sell a few on AquaBid and a web site. I gross about $300 per month, about enough to pay the electric bill and buy hay for the horses.
My advice- If you love guppies, have a high interest in genetics, or want to develop/improve a strain, go for it. If you want to make money raising fish- there are other species that will be better.

In fact, the reason I am at this forum is to find information on a unique fish that could live well on the thousands of cull guppies that are not good enough quality to sell!

Yes they are.
Look in the classifieds on AC.If no one is selling any N class right now, they soon will be.Post a WTB,and someone will get ahold of you.Sometimes they are literally giving them away for for the price of shipping.Usually $7.

Almost anything, really. Young cichlids, convicts, needlefish, ctenopoma, leaf fish, even bettas.

Oh and what do you do about guppies eating their offspring?

You need to get the femlae into a breeder net,or tank, before she gives birth.A major PITA if you ask me.You have to keep a close eye on her.If you move her too soon, she may not give birth at all,and she will absorb the babies back into her body.If you are looking to breed fish for profit,or for feeders, egg layers are the way to go IMO.

Thanks for all the help every1 :O
I have convicts in a 55g and they just won't breed. My first pair had free swimming fry in 2 weeks, now my 4 cons(1m3f, was 2m3f) had unfertilized eggs twice and nothing for about 3 months =[

I think I'm going to buy endlers off ac or aquabid since I like the way they look and they're a lot cheap :D
