Breeding Guppies!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well sorry to break it to you but your doing it wrong.

First off your best to have a bare bottom aquarium because at night the guppies go to the bottom. Then the bacteria builds up in the substrate. When the guppies sleep the bacteria starts to eat there fins and its hard to grow back.
Second the fancy guppies you may get come from a sterile enviorment. A lot of breeders do water changes every 2 days. They bleach there tanks once a month. And that makes the guppy have no amune system. So they'll be very weak to sudden changes.
Also its alright but its better to breed guppies in a 20 gallon aquarium where the guppies are easy to catch when born and have a clean bottom. Its best to have they babies seperated for 3 months before adding them back to the parent aquarium b/c they are more fragile when young and deises can catch to them faster then the parents. This should be done with each batch but if you don't got the room its fine to keep with parents but be careful with them.
Next if you want to get java moss and cork and wrap it together with an elastic and it will stay on the top. Sponge filters should be ran on the parent tank and water should be changed by 10 % at least twice a week with water thats been conditioned and ran with an air stone for 8 - 12 hours.
After your guppies are born and are mature find the female with no color to it and keep it no matter what and that will be your "blonde" guppy. Then you get your nicest male and breed them and when they have babies they will look exactly like there father.
After 200 babies that are grown to maturity you got your good guppies. This is when you can guess the out comes. And you can sell them for good money.

Tip: Try to get Snakeskin guppies since there the hardiest of all fancy guppies and can be vauled at $150 +

Good luck and im just telling you the best way breeders do it and there your guppies so you can do whatever you like with them. If you got any questions feel free to pm me.

I look forward to something, I think I'm doing it right, and you just killed it.

I've seen guppy tanks WITH gravel/sand. I'm not going to do water changes every 2 days and bleach the tanks. I don't need to worry about the babies because I'm going to give them away to my LFS. i just wanted to try it during my summer vacation..
I don't care if I do it wrong, i'll learn from my mistakes. but don't just start critisizing everything I do. I read up as much as I can, I got a "breeding guppies" book from my LFS.

SE1AN IS A DREAM KILLER!!!!!!!!!!! He will learn from mistakes and when he dotn know wht went wrong and wants to give up then u tell.

I want to breed pirahna one day. And i dont wan t dream killers.

Uh, the advice you just recieved was great advice, no need to be offended. Guppies are unbelievably easy to breed so I wouldn't stress it too much, usually the hard part is getting them to stop, haha. Just think, if it goes badly you'll have a steady and safe supply of feeders:ROFL:

I don't do feeders, I'm just giving the babies to my LFS as feeders.
And if they're SO easy to breed, then tell that guy to stop being so critical :(

i think se1an is being a little critical by saying, '' Well sorry to break it to you but your doing it wrong ''.

that's no way to start a conversation...lol

anyways, i think se1an may be speaking from experience...
however, like mentioned earlier its very easy to breed guppies... honestly clean water, good food and hiding spaces are really all that's needed..

if u keep ur sand/gravel clean then who cares if the guppies ''sleep'' on the bottom; as said by se1an.
water changes are great but if u do them to often i could see it effecting the fish in negative way. frequent water changes are excellent when needed. if u do weekly gravel vacs and have lots of filtration, you should only need 1-2 water change per week.

also,i think someone mentioned some BS about sponge filters only being for small tanks...

# 1 define small tanks?

# 2 i know a local breeder/supplier that uses sponge filters only on all their tanks!!!! they use to use AC HOBS now they switched to sponge filters and are selling all of their AC HOBS

their tanks range from 2.5 gallons to 150 gallons...in some peoples eyes all of these tanks may be considered small..heres my supplier and the one im talking about: http://www.canadianaquatics.com/

point is .. sponge filters are great!!! i would use them but their ugly and take up space in the tank..lol

however, it gets to a certain point where fluidized sand filters and large sumps would be the best option. but in a guppy breeding scenario 100% sponge filters for sure!!!

It's done. I'm not breeding guppies anymore. I'm trying to convince my dad that I'll take down both 10 gallons, and the 26 gallon for another 55 or 75; I'm trying to make my current 75g brackish for my Columbian sharks.

Maybe next summer :(
