Breeding Help!!!!!!!

With Central American cichilds (including convicts) it's usually a monogamous pair (1 male 1 female) at a time with a large collection of eggs that results in 100's of babies at once that often experience a large die off as the fry hatch and grow from egg. Start with say 300 eggs, and within 2 weeks end up with 50 babies or less. These parents will usually actively guard the fry for a few weeks after hatching to protect them from predators.

African cichlids are polygamous pairs or harems (1 male, many breeding females) who each spawn and hold a much smaller clutch of eggs (10-40 eggs) that are "spit" ~3 weeks after spawning, or ~1.5-2 weeks after hatching in the mother's mouth. This results in much more advanced fry from the moment they are exposed to the environment, and provided adequate hiding spots, many of those fry will survive on their own.

The end result is probably about the same survival rate at the 1 or 2 month point.
