Breeding Hybrids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A cross between two animals that are categorized differently in species or earlier in scientific classification. So, not a morph, as commonly seen with leopard geckos and corn snakes.

I could not find the post that I tried making on here earlier before my computer had crashed.

I've always wanted to try to breed an AFT with a leopard gecko, however from what I hear it's impossible, that and the areas of which they live in are a bit different.

I wouldnt say its impossible, Ive seen much stranger combos done, but that doesant mean you should.

^y not?
i cant remember atm of what AFT stands for but leopard geckos def have enough stock to mess with to create some cool hybrids

By eastern bearded dragon you mean Pongona barbata? Because if yes sorry but that crossbreeding has already taken place many years ago, the offspring are fertile and dont look anywhere like a harlequim bearded dragon, the colors simply mix. The resulting hibrid form are the german giants and they are both bigger and more prolific then comon beardies.

I wondered where the german giant line came from. Just wasnt sure if beardies had the same capabilities as leopard geckos and other reptiles for the coloration

AFT I believe is african fat tailed gecko. The environment does create a bit of a conundrum as well - there are for example tropical and desert monitor lizard species that would have no problem hybridizing other than that they don't share an environment in nature.

People do hybridize reptiles theres even an entire site dedicated to hybrid herps. mostly hybrid snakes. Some reason to do so are hybrid vigor, from what ive read hybrid snakes grow faster and take there first meal quickly. Some also throw out amazing colors and patterns and usually all of the siblings are different. Crossing very closely related species is pointless to me. they look way to closs to the parent species and could get mixed in pure lines. crossings of different genus is always amazing.

If you are wanting to investigate or produce lizard hybrids you should check out Aspidoscelis sp. or Sceloperus sp. The males in these groups are not to discriminating and usually end up essentially raping the females anyway. I have had a lot of luck and have even produced some triploids using the parthenogenetic species.

Snake wise, I have been trying for several years to produce a blood x burm with no luck. Imagine a snake with that much bulk and length, it would be a tame, terrestrial green anaconda with better colors.
