One of my favorite cichlids is the jack dempsey. I have a male in a 75 gallon, so yesterday I bought a female and put her with my guy. He was acting all funny swiming after her and almost like twiching lol, but today hes almost picking on her. What should I do to raise the chances for them to breed. My temp is between 75-78 and the filtration, I have rena xp3 and eheim easy 80 filters.

the "twitching" is just the male showing off for the female, showing he is dominant. the fact that he is now nipping at her maybe be a sign he is frustrated because after all his attempts to entice her, she hasn't shown much of a responce. like suggested above, wait til she is acclimated and see how it goes

A little update, I got another female to the mix, but I guess she took the "ditcher fish" role. Anyways set the temp at 82 deg. Fed them frozen blood worm and added small slate rock in the back of the tank. Since last night, they have been cleaning the "site" and twitching on the slate, but no eggs. I know its been only 6 days or so, but im losing hope.

We have eggs, they laid them while I was getting ready to go to work. First female a tried and it worked, its been only eight days since I got her. Should I leave the eggs with the parents??? Also should I take out the third dempsey( not a parent)

short video I made ,sorry about the poor quality, in this video you will see just a few eggs on the slate, well try to see its kinda hard, they stopped when I walked into the room. The whole slate is covered by eggs right now.

I've got two large Jacks that show signs of breeding behavior as well. However, the female is unresponsive. It's been a year and no fry. The Male chases the female sometimes to the point where she looks stressed. Sometimes they swim together and he nudges her. Is there any hope for this "pair?"

A year seems like a long time, adding another female may be a good idea. Whats your temp?? make sure you feed them around 3-4 times a day with high protein foods, like frozen treats. Water changes good water quality. Those are just things that worked for me, may not work for all, but as of now I have couple hundred fry swimming in my 75 gallon.:nilly:

Yes once you have a pair, remove the other female or she will be killed. Might wanna add some dithers like Giant Danios. They add color and movement to the tank. They also help alot in breeding tanks.
