Breeding Jacks

Its more interesting to let the parents raise the fry they are usually great parents.
Always get the extra female out,she would be in danger.Glad it worked out and congrats on the spawn.

I've got a 56 gal column (not very wide/long). Both fish are about 5-7" long (body only, not including tail/fins). I hesitate to add dithers. Temp was very high over the summer (82F) and is now down to 78, so perhaps I will try during the winter. I have a lid on the tank that keeps temps up, plus the room gets very warm (no less than 75). I feed a variety of pellet, freeze-dried, and frozen foods once a day. I change 25% water once every two weeks. Should I raise the temps, feed more often, and perform more frequent water changes (25-50%)?

I got the ditcher fish out asap, and then when I saw the mother eat like 15 of the fry in a minute, she had to go to. Anyways my temp is dead at 82, I would go with a different female a yea is a long time. Cant wait till my baby jacks grow to like 2 ", then im going to get a 125 for them.

are you sure that the mother ATE the fry? cuz if my memory serves me correctly dempseys are mouth brooders which means that they will protect the fry by keeping them in their mouths until the danger is gone....

Yes sir, she did that before and thats what I thought was going on, but she ate like 15-20 of them. But no biggie theres alot left and mom is happy in the 55 now.

i believe the reason why your fish arent breeding is because your tank isnt big enough. since jacks get so big they need the length and width space. height isnt much help to them. ive also noticed mine seem to breed after i feed earth worms or hamburger meat and a big water change. i keep my temp at 80 degrees. good luck!! these fish are amazing to watch during this whole process.

I'm doing more frequent water changes and rearranging/adding driftwood to create more hiding places. We'll see how that turns out. If nothing changes, I may be giving up the female (beautiful girl) to a new home.
