Ok, so my male and female Jags are finally breeding. Hundreds of eggs at the bottom of the tank. How long until they hatch? Once they hach, what do I do? WHat do the fry eat? Will mommy and daddy start eating the fry?

My first time parent (4 real kids, no fish kids). :)

Thanks

probably 2-3 days until they hatch. You can feed the first bites by Hikari or VERY finely crushed flake food. The parents should not eat the babies. They will eventually if left in the tank. They will do so before there next spawn to ensure the new babies are not eaten by the older batch.

Thanks guys. How long after they hatch should I wait before I separate them from the parents?

anywhere from a few day up to about 3 weeks. I would do about 2 the parents should help feed them with the food particles that will be expelled through their gills. I'm not a breeding expert but that's what I would do.

hi there. my jags had babies about 2 weeks ago. they actually hatched around 3-4 days after they were laid, and became free swimming around 3 days later. i started feeding them frozen rotifers and baby brine shrimp. they are still on this diet after week 2. i don't anticipate them leaving this diet for bigger fare for another 1.5-2 weeks, in which time i plan to move them onto frozen mysis and eventually brine shrimp, flakes and other stuff. keep us posted and good luck!
