Breeding Jaguar Cichlids

Wouldn't dropping the temperature with a water change stress the fish and run the potential for ick?

Also is it always the male that nips the female?
The reason I ask is because my larger Jag is nipping my smaller Jag's side as shown in the picture but I thought the larger Jag was female and the smaller one male?

It depends on the drop in temperature. A couple of degrees shouldn't pose a problem. 10-15 degrees is asking for trouble....but not necessarily a definitive "yes it would".

No...both male and female will display that tendency for nipping during breeding.

Like mojo said its absolutly posiible to develop an ick issue with dropping themp all of a sudden to much. The I always drop it by around 4-6 degrees and this could potentially cause an issue as far as anything stress related goes. But with a good healthy tank and good healthy fish, regular w/c routine we all know that a little stress will only rarely cause an issue. And realisticlly how do we all treat ick? Raise the temp so if for some reason the fish do develop ick (I have never had it happen because I always use healthy stock in an established tank) the "cure" to ick is just around the corner with the raising of the temp. And adding a little salt shouldn't mess up the breeding prep you have been setting up for if it was essential. Nice take on it though, never thought about that for some reason. Isent it strange how its allways the simple things that can be over looked sometimes?

Thanks...... but its absolutly true for me and my wife knows it. I'm working on her scientific name.

Sexual maturity comes at diffrent sizes. I have personally never bred jags (so someone with more experiance with jags can correct me if I'm wrong). Giving the final size of the jag I'm going to take a gues and say around or after 6 inches. I would gues like just under a year old. Once again I don't know ffor sure this is just guess.
