Breeding L200s?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just added a small piece of slate to help reduce aggression. The big male has been chasing all other males out of the only piece of slate in the tank. I added one more, and he as well as one female are now inhabiting this new spot, and the rest are scattered across the rest of the tank.

The large male has corraled the female into the pseudo cave. I will keep tabs on the occurances in the tank.

Here are the new ones.

The two caves pictured are both in the tank. The largest male has claimed the slate one, and already has a female that also hangs out in the cave with him. Both retreat into it when I get too close. I'm thinking spawning maybe ready soon. I am currently in a high temp, and soon will begin wc with cool water. We will see if that is enough to trigger spawning.

Well today I was gone much of the day for a birthday for my son. When I arrived home tonight 4 of 5 large L200s were dead, 1 small L200, and 1 L128 were all dead. Also in the casualties was the hydro gar. Of the L200 adults lost 2 were male and 2 were female. Unfortunately the filter had clogged, and was not pumping any water, thus no oxygen. Currently unsure what clogged it, but there was 0.00% flow. To make matters worse they were currently in the low flow, higher temp section of breeding conditioning. I do still have one large male, and one small L200, plus one small L128. I will not be able to rebuild again for another few months. At which point they may not be available in the same size again.

What I found for a blockage was plant material. Good news though, the largest male, and one other male have begun to breath. I am attempting to bring back the two females, but no signs so far. Both males are now breathing on their own.

Wow, sorry to hear that man. I was looking forward to some fry....

How did you get them to breath again???

Plugged some powerheads, and air pumps up, and got them right into the stream. They actually were out of the tank for nearly 10 minutes. I was talking to a friend and went in again, and picked one up, and it kicked a little. I threw them all back in and one started to breath immediately.

Final update for tonight:

It appears that the two males will make it, leaving me with 4 L200s, and 1 L128. As to how much this may have hampered their ability to reproduce, and compete for food I do not know. The two have begun to react to stimulants, and even swimming. Hopefully by tomorrow they will be back to stable conditions. The 2 females and 1 small L128 & L200 are all dead.

**** man that sucks. so you only have males left? what was the male female ratio before and now? thats a few catastrophes with the L200s now
