I am currently working on trying to convince my husband that we need to build a breeding pond for the stingrays, but for the time being I am interested in breeding food for these guys. They already have a huge diet consisting of many different things, but this is costing me a arm and leg. I am wondering what I can breed to help on my pocket book. I usually feed them for 4 days in a room and then take a 2 day break.

Rays are very expensive no matter what you do. When it comes to raising your own feed often the only benifit IMHO is that you know the source and dont need to quarnt. Otherwise raising your own food requires lots of time, space, and money. Whether it be to feed or house your food, in the end it tends not to be worth it to many ray and fish owners. Even raising simple convicts or earthworms takes more time, space, money, and effort than most people realize!

Just my .02

i would breed earthworms. it is the easiest...

worms have the advantage but in order for this to remotely work you need to buy a very large number... this way you can still feed...

IMO your better off feeding nothing but prepared foods and buying in bulk..

What does your rays diet consist of anyway?

Where abouts in canada are you. Take a drive out in the country and do some digging or do the old electric rod in the ground trick and spend a day getting some buckets of nightcrawlers. The time spent and money raising would be more than just doing this. Plus if you know the farmer he'll know the ground history. eg. fertilizers, rig spreads ect...

i feel that the cheepest method is pellets. I have been feeding pellets and 2.2 lbs of cichlid gold mixed with 2.2lbs of massivore will last me 4 months $$65.00-$70...that is just $17.50 a month, i might buy 2 lbs of shrimp too in that time $10.00.

that is feeding 2 10-13" motoros and 2 7" hybrids.

can't get much cheaper.

pellets, krill, silversides. my rays do GREAT on that! i raise red trout worms for my rays too but they only breed fast enough to use them as a treat once a week and its a pain to harvest them.

I always feed my ray with MP and I thought it is cheaper than pellets. One pound of market prawn costs about $6 to $8.00. A few ounce of Hikari siking pellet costs about the same. Weight wise, MP seems to cost less. Do I miss something here? Why is it cheaper with pellet?

Because I still have young rays, I stick with earthworms. They are filling, have lots of nutriutional value, cheap and easy to get. Blackworms are a hassle to kept and expensive. Blood worms are not filling enough.

I am hoping to get them on market shrimp or pellets in the near future.
