As most of you have already seen, I picked up a very nice Midas last week. I would like to try to breed him, but never made a decent attempt at breeding. So, let me tell you what I'm workin with here and I'm hoping I can get some more great advice! Tank size-Currently in a 75g, but can go to a 90 or 150 long. All water parameters are great:Ammonia-0, Nitrites-0, Nitrates are less than 10ppm (I do a lot of water changes). PH is 8, which, from what I've read like a little closer to aroudn nuetral. My ph is what I believe may be the problem. So if it is, what do you think about additives to lower my ph? As far as breeding, I believe I would just like to have a nice quality female Midas. My guy is right aroudn 12" and is just totally massive, so I'm going to have to do some searching for a compatible mate. Thanks for all your help!

I'd switch to the 150 gallon tank, throw a divider in it and try to find a female that's at least 7-8" big for a starting point.

I would def go to the 150 before trying to breed him. Also as far as the ph goes it's much better to have a stable ph then to try and alter it chemicly. You could use drift wood in the tank as the wood leaches the tannic acid it will lower and buffer the ph. A ph of 8 is not terrable, what was the ph in the tank he was kept in before you bought him? I'll bet it was similar if you bought him locally and share the same water source.

As far as breeding him, like I said go 150 frist and use a divider to sperate them durining introduction. It could be hit or miss as to weather he'll accept the female but you could always try breeding them through the divider if all else fails. Just think all this great advice and it'll olny cost you some fry ;)

Thanks guys. The ph at the lfs was 7.8. He wasn't there long, and I could not tell ya what the ph was at his original home. Aquanero, you are more than welcome to fry as long as you can come get them! Everyone here has been a big help with this guy. I've had a couple pms from people wanting to buy him and I never had him on the classified section. Must be a valuable fish. I feel like the old lady with an autographed mickey mantle rookie card thats been in her closet for the past 50 yrs lol

I'll be there just give me directions to Fishbelly from the New Jersey Turnpike!

hahaha, I actually live down just north of Hagerstown, Md. Not super far from ya. Any idea on where I can look for a big quality female midas? Instead of going to petco or petsmart and growing out a million of them to find one decent one?

Definatly not too far to drive for some of those bad boys!

Sometimes The Shark Aquarium in Hillside NJ gets some great trade ins give them a call. Also drop and e-mail to Jeff Rapps and see if he can put you on to a good size female that might be a good place to start.
