breeding neon tetras

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think many try to breed them because they are high effort low reward in my opinion. You'll probably need to mess a bit with your water because they need really soft water to spawn. The fry need really small food like infusoria before they get big enough for brine shrimp and other foods. I'm not trying to discourage you, but it might be a good idea to experiment with easier ones like congos or black neons first to build up experience. Wish you the best of luck

I bred glo light tetras a few times years ago. I noticed some of them were getting fat. I put them in a bare tank with a heap of java moss covering the bottom. Apparently you can use a proper breeding mop too but I've got no idea where they can be found. After a few days themales started chasing all the females and they dropped all the eggs into the moss where they couldn't get eaten. About 3 days later they hatched and the fry emerged. Like FESHMAN FESHMAN said, I couldn't get them to eat, even frozen 1 day old brine shrimp was too big for them. Everything I tried ended up polluting the water and killing the fry. I didn't really know what i was doing, it was pre internet days and I just had some old book to guide me so maybe with a bit more research on how to feed them you would have more luck. Try it if you've got the vibe, it's always good to try things, I only had a small school of them but more fish and a larger breeding tank would probably help the odds a bit.

DIY Breeding Mops with yarn. Prior to use place Spawning Mop in water and allow it to boil to remove most of the dye from the yarn. Was successful spawning Senegal Polys with the color of Hunter Green yarn that was purchased from a Crafts store. If you want to breed Neon's go for it. If your water is hard just add leaf litter or boil leaves that are dead and dry preferably Oak Tree leaves. Allow the water in the pot to cool off before adding to the aquarium.

A good few years ago a friend of mine bread them by accident, he had a power cut so he covers his tank with blankets to try and keep his tank warm.and because his tank was in complete darkness and the drop in temperature his neons bread. hope this helps. Thanks Ray.
