breeding orange pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Orange pikes have been bred before, In fact they were one of the first Lugubris to be bred in captivity.

Hmm, 10% daily water changes, that's not too hard if you can be persistent. I already do 30-50% water changes twice aweek.

My ph in the tank my Xingu is in is 7.2, but that can be reduced chemically.

That was a helluva link, Poly. It gives me an idea. Maybe Xingus can breed readily if people have the patience to raise them to maturity and have clean acidic water. The offspring are brightly colored and should be easy to sell, even to LFSs. This is the direct opposite of many cichlids whos' colors are enhanced with age. This could be one of those rare cichlids the average person could breed and make a profit relatively quicklly.

Me personally, I'd need more tank space to do this. So it's out of the question for now. But I might have to make another trip to Aquarium Adventure in Columbus in the next few months to pick up some smaller, hopefully female Xingus. They have a lot of them. But that's only if I think there's achance I can aquire a new large aquarium in 2008.

Its possible, with the right determination and patience. They are large fish, you have to take into account the aggression they can show towards each other. Just cuz they are a pair, doesn't mean they won't kill each other.

The main problem with breeding Lugubris is getting them to maturity, having a pair, and then finding the trigger that induces them to spawn. Lower pH, soft, and possibly live foods will enhance your chances.

ok then, no one breeds thim.
not 1 out of 20,000 on MFK

Many have tried.....very few succeed. Its not that people aren't trying, believe me...its just Lugubris pikes are difficult to breed.

Definitely, lugubris do not spawn in aquairums readily. Not that it is impossible, but conditions will have to be right, space is required and chemistry between the pikes......
