Breeding Oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only ways that I know how to tell the sex of an Oscar is rather difficult. But to be able to breed them I recommend removing the parrots and keeping the tank in a low traffic zone, also put in a few flat rocks if they decide to breed. If they breed the parents have a lot to do with what you should do with the fry.

i used to have a tiger oscar and i always wanted to breed it but i had no idea what the sex was...thought it was interesting

u can tell by there anal fins...the males are long and skinny looking where as the females are more rounded and not as long..

Thanks came in not knowing what i was lookin for and got an answer due to someone elses question!!!

Hi, I'm new. I was just wondering. I have 2 oscars with 2 blood parrot cichilds. How do I know if the oscars are male and female, and if they'll breed? What should I do with the fry? Thanks! :)

the odds of winding up with a breeding pair by just getting 2 oscars is pretty low. the best way to breed them is to buy around 6 juveniles and then let them grow up and pair off naturally. if by some chance they do wind up being male and female and they do breed then you will probably need to remove the blood parrots. :)

What size are your oscars? If they are small you may still have a while to go before they would start to show pair bonding behaviour. How big is your tank BTW?

:iagree: I was able to breed a pair of albino oscars before, i separated the pair from a bunch of oscars. You'd know coz you'd see some courtship going on like mouth locking or wrestling or kissing between two oscars, that's when you'll know they're a pair.

I have three oscars together and today I just started seeing the lip locking and a little bit more action and aggression between my large albino male and large orange and green blackish female... I was wondering how long do I have really if they have paired up for the female to lay some eggs or any of that??
