Well I have what I think is a pair of red oscars in a 55 gallon tank. They look like they are getting ready to breed but they have been slapping their tails and lip locking for a while now and no spawning yet. They are about 7-8 inches both of them. I know the tank is a bit small for them but I read they can breed in a 55 gallon.

What can I do to help them breed or what they need to breed?
they got a plate there and some slate

For two oscars you need a 90 gallon tank MINIMUM. For two breeding oscars, you need a 120 MINIMUM. And any and all tank mates will be murdered.

It might not be breeding, it might just be aggression. Both things look the same but if they are indeed trying to breed you will see their breeding tubes sticking out and both of them cleaning a flat rock/digging holes in the sand. Other than that they only need clean water and no disturbances.

They might haven't fought for the tank before but Oscars reach sexual maturity at around 8-10 inches, meaning they can either start breeding or start trying to kill each other for space, which wouldn't surprise me in a 55 gal.

120G minimum? Really. A 55G should be just fine............

No. You fail.

75 Gallons should be the minimum for 2 Oscar, but a 55 will work for 1 Oscar as well. 90 Gallons for 1 and 120 for 2? Its great for fish to have as much room as possible but 90gallons for 1 and 120 for 2 is kinda over the top.

you mean 90 gallons is min for 2. 75 is too small for the bioload of two. believe me.

and recommending higher gallonage is just a way to ease the owner and fish with less water change needs because of the bioload and is not over the top at all. It makes the water change schedule more normalized.

A 55 is to small for EVEN ONE oscar. Oscars create huge bioloads that a 55 just can't handle. And that isn't even the biggest problem. 55's are only 12 inches wide, oscars can get to 16 inches. 16 is larger than 12 FYI.
