Why not apistos? I have a breeding pair of apistogramma oregon who always come to the glass to keep me away from their recently layed eggs

Im not ruling them out completely but I'm more a fan of the taller bodied cichlids such as Cryptoheros, amatitlania, etc than the longer cichlids such as kribs, apistos, and even oscars.

How about acaras or Bolvian Rams? Both are pretty fiesty and interesting imo.
