Breeding pair or a single Monster?

Very interesting to see the direction this thread has taken. It's great to know people are willing to pass their knowledge and passion on. At this point I'm leaning more away from keeping a "wet pet" and thinking more down the line of a smaller breeding pair of maybe the Firemouths or similar size species.
I've actually become fascinated by the idea of keeping a group of one of the smaller Geophagus to the point I've put them right near the top of my list.

Have you considered a group of thorichthys?
Worked well for me in a tank your size.

Dude, that looks awesome!!!

I'm tossing up between the firemouths or some geos. Looking at Rio Tapajos biotopes has me very intrigued.

A biotope is a nice thing to create.It throws you deeper into the hobby and prolongs the interest.
Researching the natural habitat of the fish you are wanting to keep and finding biotope correct tank mates,plants,rocks,substrate,water conditions etc all adds up to a rewarding progress.

There are (I believe) dimerus from all over S America, mine are the Uruguayan strain.
And since Uruguay can be temperate, as opposed to tropical, my strain would be accustomed to wide ranging seasonal variations. My Gymnogeophagus and Australoheros easily took temps down to 45'F, and in fact suffered health wise when I didn't provide a cool down.
