I have a pair of convicts breeding in my 180. I want to put them in their own tank. What is the smallest tank I can comfortably house a pair of cons in. I don't want to interupt their breeding by putting them in too small of a tank.
they'll be fine and happy in a 20-30 gallon, and they will have tons of babies.. i have 3 pairs in my55 gallkon for breeding, i started it like 3 weeks ago, and already got one batch..
I have had them breed in tanks as small as 20 gallons. The one problem you are going to have is the fun task of taking two fish out of a 180 that are hard enough to catch in a 20 gallon!
I've bred some Convicts in a 20g before. I think that a 29g would be better. More room for dither fish and for the spouses to get away from each other.
dither fish.. i was told to not have any in the tank with my convicts.. on this board... but who knows.. id suggest to get something thats not too wimpy first of all.. but if you want the fry to live, not a carniverous/piscivorous dither fish.. How bout some loaches or flying fox, or something that prolly wont eat the babies..
You don't need to waste your money on dithers.. Convicts are team parents.. Better to just have something ready case the parents start killing the fry. In a 29 should not be a problem though.. Plus danios will be short work for Cons..
The breeding pair i got from my uncle 7 years ago (long gone now) were breeding in a 29 with 4 otehr matured adult pairs !!! :O and they had 30 1-2.5 inch fish running around as well!! I would not suggest getting that out of hand .. But dithers.. Only reason for dithers in my opinion with cons is for the Torture value..
