all good info here  I also here rays are very picky with there mates. Maybe I will get lucky.

depends on the species and your male.... my motoro male is a horney bastard

It all depends a male can be all over the place or very picky. My male pearl only goes after my female marble and my male motoro only goes after my one female motoro. They are all in the same tank with 4 other mature female motoros. It's a females world so manogomy I guess is at work. :D

does the one male do the job everytime, and get every female? will he get lazy or selective? wht type of ray r u refering too?

Varies with species. My motoro males get the job done well. Leos, tiger, and otorongo have had varied results. But if I'm looking to breed, knowing the parents is the TOP of my list. I'm a BIG fan of documentation of genetics in captive populations.

I agree this is very important for us to be doing but sometimes need to put a few rays together to get things started, after that we can seperate and document properly. I guess the main thing will be honesty amongst the breeders. The first undocumented rays could go out to the hobbiest who just wants the ray and is not interested in breeding.

I think it depends on what you're looking to do.

If you want to breed for the experience, a pair is enough. You may have to wait a while, but they will likely breed at some point.

From the business standpoint, we are looking for steady pup production. My best ratio so far for steady pup production has been two males to 4 females. There are a few reasons for this.

First, having two males seems to keep breeding steady..... a single male will breed with the females, but usually not as often. It's just a theory, but I think having 2 males makes them feel a need to breed right away before the other male gets there first.

Second, I go with 4 females simply because my systems won't hold more. We're looking at building larger systems and trying 10 females to 2 males. In theory this would be a more cost effective as either way I'm feeding 12 adult rays, but with this ratio I get two extra females and thus more pups.

Now Zoodiver makes a great point about tracking parents. With more than one male in the system you can never be sure which male bred with the female. We track which males could be the father of the pups so people looking to breed can get pups from seperate systems that will be totally unrelated. We keep extensive records on the pups, the systems the came from, who the mother is, and which males could be the father.

Good luck with the breeding. Feel free to call me if you have any questions. Rays are a lot of fun and there's nothing quite like rearing pups bred in your own tank. We've had 127 motoro pups so far and have 4 pregnant females right now and it never gets old looking into the tank and finding a new litter.

I agree with Pat. You need 2 males to keep them on edge. I have a reverse trio and after she gives birth its a race for the two to get her. Motoro just seem to be a horny stingray to begin with so a pair will do the job. Every one wants females but with black rays IMO you need two males and it doesnt matter how many females. Breeding rays is fun and motoro would be best to start with because they dont take long to get mature and are breeding machines. I would get marbled because the pups will be easier to sell and worth a little more plus look sweet!
