breeding RBP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First off you will need a much bigger tank. The fact that it is overstocked and too small for p's in the first place will hurt the chances of two p's pairing off.

In addition, most RB's are around 7" before they become sexually mature and start pairing off.

Your best bet would be to get a larger tank and wait, when 2 pair off you may be able to move them back to the 55. Your best bet would be to just siphon out the fertilized eggs and put them in their own tank.

i bought 10 rbp for a 20 show tank.
they killed each other off and bred in about 8-9 months.
i bought them when they were about an inch.
there were 2 left anf bred at 5 inches

I HAVE FOUR IN A 75 AND AT 7 INCHES, THEY JUST STARTED REALLY NOTICING EACH OTHER. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING CUZ NOW THE FINS ARE BANGED UP :( :swear:

i am suprised one has not killed and eaten all the others. try a livestock trough for breeding these can be purchased at most feed stores or tractor supply 200 gallons for about $200. i have one and it makes a great indoor pond

I have bred rbp's by accident. I thought I had Harry and Steve and instead I had Harry and Shirley. lol Clean water quite often. Use a python to help you on that. Even make the water a little warmer when replacing. Feed heavily and keep the light on the tank just on a a few hours a day. Maybe 2 hours. The male will start making the hole in the gravel. If the female doesn't like the hole she will help make it bigger. They will then do their dance, which is interesting to watch. Keep the light off when you see that dance. Within a couple of days hopefully there will be eggs, if not on top of gravel, they will have hatched and you have to siphon them out. Put the babies into a ten gallon and watch them swim and hatch. I just had 15 new rbp's born and still have 7 left over from the first batch. What am I going to do with all these??????????????? :headbang2

I must say, that I had some eggs. The water wasn't changed for a month. There was many plants. I re-built the tank and then I found the eggs at the rock:cry:

I think these are eally cool fisg but I cant get any:irked: im not sure what states they are legal and what states are,but I found out I cant have them shipped to me here in cali!

I bred a pair by acciedent in a 55 glass tank....Too bad I did not have camera back then....A buddy of mine delivered 5 adults to me a week too early...I was cycling a 100g for them....SO I placed the shoal in a 55...For one week, I monitored everything and did daily water changes....On the 5th day, I had a nest...On the 6th day, I had eggs...Surprised and happy, I placed the remainder of the shoal in the 100g....After all said and done, frequent water changes stimulate the rainy season....DO it, with a lot of feedings(more than usual)....When you see them darken up(to almost black), that's when you know they are the way....When the eggs are layed, let the pair hatch them, this strengthens the bond between them.....AFter the fry are 2-3 days old, siphon them out into a growout....
