 here is my problem i have 5 redbelly pacus there big really BIG i always wanted to breed pacus but i herd storys about you cant breed them in captivity. but those were just storys i want to noe if any of you people had ever had bred pacus and how can you tell them apart?

I have never heard of anyone breeding pacus in captivity...have heard you need a big school and TONS of open, fast water...
Sexing is difficult...it's been said that the male's red coloring is more vibrant than the females, and their dorsal is pointier...

sorry, not much help....

I echo Pacu Lady. I've never heard of an aquarium spawning. I've only heard of captive farm spawning.
Pacus spawn from Oct to June. Females lay from 59000 to over 400,000 eggs. Pacus are egg scatterers and avid egg-eaters. So, if you were somehow successful in spawning them, in aquaria, you'd have to remove the adults after they're done spawning.
Pacu farms coordinate the spawn of their broodstock with introduced hormones so all females lay eggs at the same time.

What do you house your pacus in? And once you've spawned the pacu what would you do with the fry?

I've read about pacu's being used as food fish (large size, fast growing) but haven't heard any thing about taste.

How big are your pacus, and how big is your tank. I don't think I'd want to eat pacu there carg.

Pacus are used as food fish here in Brazil, and are DELICIOUS. A big pacu (red or black) is something which taste you'd NEVER forget. YUMMY!

Talking about it made me hungry... :naughty:

Best regards.

Daniel.

I heard they actually taste pretty good, I know a guy who went collecting in SA and they cought fish every day and ate them.
