I'm looking to breed my first cichlids. My goal is for enjoyment and to give some of the fry to LFS for store credit. Which of these fish would best be suited for that? And what are the bare minimum tank sizes for each pair. I don't have much room for larger tanks

Also if anyone has more suggestions for good smaller cichlids that would fit in those criteria I would be open for suggestions, just not something super common as I'd like store credit

Don't breed convicts. I promise you the store has more than enough people trying to sell/donate them.
I personally would try salvini but they're nasty with each other. Unless you have a decent sized tank where the female has room to swim away.
If you have a smaller tank, like 30 gallons, I'd go with the fire mouths.

I can probably get a 40G breeder tank that was my concern with the salvini was the "relationship issues" lol! I found a store that has rainbow cichlids and they only get 6" but I don't know anything about them

I agree with ehh, most stores wont even take convicts and the few that do, normally dont give store credit.
Salvinis are nasty, I kept my old breeding pair in a 120 with some sds and the male would still kick the snot out of the female. I think your best bet is firemouths. They'll be fine in a 29. Its best to start with 6 juvies but starting with 3-4 adults (trio or 2 pairs) should get you a pair. Fire mouths are a good begginner cichlid and arent too tricky to spawn. Their mating displayes are very entertaining.

Take a look at these. Not common and you may have to order them but you should have no problem selling the fry.
A 40B will work just fine for either.

Firemouths are hard to get rid of also. Anything easy to breed and common are hard to get rid of. Maybe look at rare thorichtys like Elliot or Passionis. If you have a good relationship with your LFS look at Honduran Red Points.

Mike gives some good suggestions, all that will all breed in smaller tanks, especially when young, and may have appeal to a LFS

I also think multispinossa (rainbow) is reasonable, I just had a pair spawn in a 20gal

and another that don't require a large tank might be Honduran Red Points
mine just spawned in a 45 gal high tank, which has a fairly small foot print

I like Honduran red points. I would probably have to order them though. Are they similar to convicts aggression wise?
