Breeding Size & Advice for Midas/Red Devil?

That Midas you have in there is impressive anywhere in the world. Never would i get rid of that fish.

Red texas and fh seem like your run of the mill fish. Thousands like them. You want to do a project with amphiliophus, keep the two males you got and search for a couple of females. You have a lot of reputable sources in america. I just wish i had them here...

Thank Miguel. This is kind of my first go at really keeping big cichlids for more than a year. Haven't lived in one place long enough or had a tank big enough to really keep these kind of fish for extended time of a year or more. Here's what I am thinking I will do. I'm at least going to get rid of the flowerhorn today. Down the road if I want another, I know my LFS can get them in as they have them right now. She is pretty, but you're right, she is replaceable pretty easily. Besides, her and the midas are causing a bunch of drama right now as they're probably getting ready to try round 2 of laying eggs, and pounding on my salvini, so it'll be nice to have that drama out of the tank. I am going to try and pick up 3 of these Devils the LFS got in yesterday. I don't plan on necessarily keeping them all 3 long term, but if I can get one female for my piebald, and maybe even one female for my midas in the 125, that would be great, and I would just trade or sell the remaining 3rd pending on the drama. These devils at the LFS are definitely smaller than I imagined, but should be big enough to sex. I will try putting them in my 125 to grow them out a bit and see what happens. I am pretty sure the rest of the fish in the tank should tolerate the smaller devils as the jaguar and red texas are pretty much the same size. Eventually I may get rid of the red texas too, as you said Miguel. I want to give him a little more time to see what he'll look like but I may change my mind before the day's out too. One less little male might mean better chances of the devils focusing on growth and/or the midas. Ultimately if the 125 had the 2 salvini, 2 devils, and my jag, I think that'd be doable and look really cool. This is what I will try to work toward. Thanks everyone for the guidance. Feel free to keep it coming.

Keep in mind that main issue with these bulls we have is to keep males without females. A mixed sex comm is, sooner rather than later, impossible.

I keep a big Midas comm, 7 near one foot males, witha couple of other males together.

I wnat to make a pair, i put in a female and let the pair form in a coiple of hours, and out they come, because, in the meantime, a peacefull comm has turned into WWIII.

I hear ya. I was doing a really good job of keeping my community tank all males. Got lucky I guess. Well when I bought this flowerhorn, I was hoping for a male... Nope. Got a girl. Instant drama added. Haven't had this 125 gallon but just about 4 years so I still feel like I am testing its potential in what I can really keep in it, not to mention just learning about these big fish too and their potential. It's been fun, but definitely testing. Thanks again for all your help Miguel.

What Sized tank are your midas in? and what are the other males?

These seven midas, 2 jags and one mayan are in cica 400 gallon tank, with an aro and clown knife

That Midas is definitely the keeper out of that tank - awesome fish!

I saw on Cichlid Connection's stock list that they hav 6-7in piebald midas in stock. I'm sure they could probably sex them for you if you wanted to order a few females.

Is that a website or another MFK member? My LFS has about 8 devils in now. They're only 2-3" and not piebald unfortunately but they look good! I'm gonna try to see if I can sex a couple of them and see what I get.

I find that the best time to breed angry CAs like various red devil types (as well as cubans, carpintis, salvini, cyanoguttatus, etc.) is when they're small.

Many will breed at 3 or 4"... in a 55g or smaller .... and without all of the bloodshed and craziness associated with trying to bring together 12" monsters.

In retrospect, I wish I would have got a handful and tried to keep a pair. I did have a pair of salvini, but at the time I didn't want to try breeding anything. Or maybe that was my wife not wanting me to breed anything, any fish anyway.... But now I'm wishing I kept that female salvini. Breeding fish is something I have only ever done by accident. Had some jewels do it, some convicts do it (who hasn't), some guppies do it, my flowerhorn and midas tried doing it. Now I'm wanting to try it on purpose and with some of my grown fish. We'll see what happens. Maybe even a couple of these smaller devils I get later today will take to each other and not the bigger one in the 125. That'd be cool too! Just want it to happen.

Well i got rid of my FH and texas and raph cat yesterday to make some space. I picked up 4 juvy 2" or so devils. From what i can tell 3 out of 4 of them now seem to look like males swimming around with their business out. Not sure on the 4th though. The whole point of this was to try and find a female but out of the 8 devils the LFS ordered, i cant say i could tell he had any. We'll see what happens and keep looking.
