Has anyone ever bred sp. Venezueala before on MFK? How big do they have to be to spawn?

I breed a bunch of other stuff, but my goal is to breed pikes. I have a pair in w/ one of my spawning pairs of festae. Usually the festae are dominant over the sp vennys, but today I noticed they dug out where they usually hide, they were defending their turf as opposed to running and female pike was acting just like my female festae when she wants to spawn, shaking & vibrating back against the male and their colors were different.

Kind of sounds like mating acts to me. I only have one Venny and hes under 12 inches, so I wouldn't know about breeding them. However, at his current size he is digging a crater right under the driftwood all the way down to the glass. I only have a Salvini in there with him, so I haven't seen any territorial issues between the two.

What size tank do you have them in? What are their tank mates?

Their in a 75 gallon where they have right side of the tank and a pair of festae that are about to spawn for the 2nd time occupy the left. No serious battles yet, but I did notice a difference. I know vennys get HUGE and I'm working on a all pike tank in the future. I have pairs of atabapo 1, cincta and lenticulata too, but no spawns yet at least interms of pikes.

Yeah a 75 is a little small. Especially for two of them. I mean, once they spawn there might be more conflict in the fish are large enough and the tank is small. I mean this is what I have seen from experience. I am sure others will have a better knowledge of the festaes and what not. Ive never owned them. How big are the Vennys?

Lugubris group pikes have only been spawned a couple of times in aquaria. It would be quite an accomplishment if you get them to spawn.

I know and that's why its my goal. I've had 5 pairs/4 species spawn for me in last 3.5 weeks. The female pike was acting just like my other females prespawn. However, the female festae's tube is HUGE, I did a small cool water change yesterday and I wouldn't be surprised if it triggered them. My good fried that rs 50 fathoms pet shop out here, said his friend has a pair of Johanna pikes that are spawning!! My atabapo 1 pair, just dig, dig and dig some more. They are inseparable, but no eggs. After talking to my pike guru DAN Ye, I'm going to start turning heaters up and down and see what happens.

Ive had my Venny, maybe four months tops, hes almost tripled in size and has the biggest appetite Ive ever seen on a fish in all my years of fish keeping. None the less, I still love him ;)

Why would you want to turn the heater up and down? Just turn it up to 84, then do cooler water changes to drop it down to about 78. More than enough.

Your pikes are awefully small, still adolescents, but size doesn't always matter. What does matter is age. Problem with lugubris pikes is a lot of them just aren't kept till sexual maturity. I've had my Lents for over three years now and they are just now starting to show spawning signs.

Best of luck to you, hope you can achieve it.

My lents are small, but they act like a pair, females colors change she vibrates back ito male. They defend their nest area, where they dug out rocks under the driftwood very vigorously and male goes nuts after his refelection when she displays. I will take some video to post, I just love watching them. I did a cool water change and it triggered the festae in that tank, females tube was enoromous last night.
