along the similar token..what is the smallest tank they can breed in..? do they really need 500 gals or can a retic breed in a 200 plus?

It's not really about gallons, but about footprint. The space is why they like to use when breeding. If you have good water quality in a shallow circular kiddie pool that's 180 gallons but 6 feet across, you're more likely to get them breeding than a standard 180 gallon glass tank.
