can any freshwater ray mate? does it need to be the same kind or it dont matter just as long as one is meal and other female???

It all depends on the individual rays. Similar species are more likely to mate. Cross breeds are less fussy in choosing who they mate with.

You need to know how long each ray takes to reach maturity too. I would not try brackish water rays, china ray or antenna ray family. Not for beginners.
