anybody here keep smaller softshell turtles, that could live in a 30 or 40 long.I really wanna get into softshell turtles.I want a frt but i cant afford one.

They grow. As babies you can kep them. Low ater. Sand bottom. Some basking places.

any more things i should know? thanks miguel,im takin notes!

The males of some species stay relatively small, but you're still looking at 10"+ in most cases. Even then you'll need probably at least 75 gallons eventally

I have never head of a dwarf type of soft shell turtle. Since it's inmposible to sex a baby, I wouldn't take a chance and let one live in such a small tank. Many soft shell turtle get very large and i wouldn't recommend one for you.

How about make a large enclosure for your monitor first.

Yes, I agree, that savannah monitor needs out of that 30 gallon ASAP, I don't care how small it is.

Anyway, male spiny softshells are the smallest softshells I know of, around 10 inches I believe. They are shy, but spunky little turtles, lots of fun. If you want a small turtle besides a softshell, try a stinkpot, they only get about 6 inches and will do fine in a 30 or 40 gallon.

Male smood softys get even smaller specialy one of the subspecies but they are hard to come by, chinese softys get to about 20-25 cm, need at least a 150 liter tank and are your best bet:D

You are saying low water for baby rigth:confused: Softshell turts are acomplished swimers and even babys like about 10cm high of water. Adults can easily handle 2 foot of water:D That is in fact the minimum deep for the big softys like floridas once adult;)

I thought the water depth had to be low enough so the the turtle can breath using only his neck.
