I hear you can make an acceptable mead without fancy equipment. A guy I knew in college brewed a few gallons in his dorm for the Medieval Studies reception.

I would imagine...Isn't mead just white wine, honey, and herbs/spices?

Mead is a very ancient drink. It's where the term "honey moon" comes from. People belived it would increase your chances of having a male child. Something about sugar effecting your ph and ph effecting your temp, temp effecting your "boys" ect... Sorry, I'm not a scientist..

I used to brew but it gets pretty expensive. Sanitizing all the bottles is a huge pain in the butt so I eventually started using a old cleanable 6 gal. pepsi keg and forcing co2.

Works good but some folks get a hang over from forced co2 as opposed to bottom fermation.

I would suggest buying a few bottles of mead before investing in making a batch, you and your friends might not like it.

Close...Honey Moon came from the period during and after the wedding where the bride and groom would drink the honeymead. Each ingredient in the mead had to do with fertility, but not just boys. I learned all this in Ireland, talking to one of the Historians at Bunratty Castle.

So many mead historians here. I learned the same when I was in Colorado over winter break- went to a meadery. I think the guy in college just used water, honey and brewer's yeast. It took him about a month from what I remember.

Just had some Barleywine last month. Not too bad.

Here in Hawaii our access to craft brew is limited.

I just made a Macadamia Nut Honey Brown Ale. Came out pretty good, but don't think we did the calculations on how much honey to use right cause it didn't have enough honey flavor to the final. Tasted more like a traditional nut brown ale.

Honey doesn't have a very assertive flavor, that's why it's used with wheat beers, blondes, and lagers a lot of the time. Sounds like it turned out pretty good, anyways.

It must be great to brew yer own beer! Think of all those drinks and yu'll be saving money! And if you're like me, you don't even have to leave the comfort of your own home. If only......
