Brighter Marineland LED

Cool, yeah the 2nd gen ones are starting to do it the right way. Using high power LEDs. They even said themselves that the original 5mm LED panels (pic I quoted) were 'crummy' ;)

Red LED for supporting strong "vegetative" growth

Got their facts twisted on this one. Blue supports Vegetative growth. Red is for Fruiting/Flowering.

From what I understand, red doesn't penetrate the water column very well either, so red LEDs are kindof a waste in an aquaria setup.

yeah i dont know much about the old ones. i just have seen what my LFS carries. everytime i go in there's swarms of reefers huddled around the display tank that's using these fixtures. id love to try one on my planted tank but the initial investment is a little too high. they really are some impressive fixtures. they even run them on the big frag tanks and freshwater planted tanks.

they said theyre trying to switch all their tanks over to these fixtures. they estimate the cost saving in electricity could save them over $3k a month since they have hundreds of tanks in this shop, not to mention the massive MH fixtures on their reef tanks

Yeah, even DIY they are spendy initially. But the money you save buying 2 200W Metal Halides initially is offset within a year by the higher power bills and bulb replacement. Basically do you want to pay now or later. :) LEDs really proove themselves over the long haul though. When you can run a light for 5-10 years with no bulb replacements at all, that's a pretty good investment.

yeah exactly. im running a 70w MH on my next planted tank. only because it's an 18" cube and it's hard to find a fixture for it, otherwise id' be using T5HO. a 70w isnt all that bad :)
