When I had Malawis, I had them in a bare tank for a week while I was revamping my main tank.
They still fought.

I think it's in their nature. Yes, if there is no decor to mark out a terratory, it may may some of them calmer. But there are other factors as well.

African cichlids are way different.

I have never had luck w/ keeping CA cichlids in a bare tank. I think the more they see each other the worse it gets. I have added hiding spots and I have no aggression at all.

My experience, for what its worth:

No decor, so no territories ( a couple of stones in any case )

No Females in the mix.

Way to many other factors. Feeding, temp, number of fish, tank size. Even shape of fish can make a huge difference in some cases. This question is way to general to answer properly.

Albeit being general, the question can be broadly answered.

I keep 7 male Midas wiith 3 Male Jags and a Texas x Jag, all around the same size ( 12-14 inches ).

It works without problems.

Of course the higher the temps is, and the more territorail space they can create to defend, the more difficult, but imho it is not rocket science.

Just keep the ladies away from the mix.

what size tank? Gotta be over 300+

Around that, give or take

Yes on the plants for breaking line of sight no on decor. I have both situation and the ones gaurding crap beat up everyone around, the ones without caves dug a pit and beat up everyone around and the one with no decor substrate just float around not knowing who to beat up. Chase but no attacks, adding plants would reduce the chasing.
