Bringing the technology to a fish room

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I have the following for my 220G Arowana tank:
1. Timer with 3 sockets, separate control. Also connecting to WiFi and accessible via mobile app. My aquarium lights, and wave maker runs on this, almost hands free. manual control also available.

2. Camera to check the fish when I am away. It has option to record and motion sensor etc but currently turned off, am using camera like a live channel, and can access from my mobile. I can control tank lights via mobile so that helps.

3. We face frequent power cuts here so we have an Inverter UPS for the entire house which runs back up for a couple of hours. I have got an airpump which has a battery and also always connected to a power source, just in case it doesn't detect power it automatically turns on. Otherwise it's off. Luckily I didn't have to use this airpump for last one year, so I just test it works during water changes by manually switching off power...

My reef tank is almost fully automated. Lights, wavemakers, and return pumps are all run through the app and their wireless connection (Ecotech mp40, radion g4 Pro XR30 lights, vectra m1 Pump/Reeflink ecosmartlive). All dosing equipment, heating, ATO and monitors are run through apex 2016. I don’t use the apex controller for the lights, wavemaker, and pump as I want redundancy in my system. If apex fails, at least I have a secondary system.

You have a link to the timer with WifI?

My best girl actually suggested I start this thread so props go to her! This Is something that I have been doing my fish room for about a year now.

As many of you know, technology is continuing to advance and change, and I for one, and very excited about some of the new options. Below are a few of the things that I have installed in my fish room, and if you have any other suggestions of things it would be fun to mess around with please do share.

Wi-Fi enabled outlets and switches: I now run all of my lights on these outlets, and the main lights for my room on a Wi-Fi switch. I also run water polishing pumps in things that our supplemental that I would like to be able to turn on and off on these outlets. If you look around, you can find them for around 5 to 10 dollars apiece. Do not run after Home Depot and drop $35 apiece, they are basically the exact same thing, not necessarily any better, and her overpriced. The cool thing about having your fish room set up on this is, you can turn on and off all of your lights and supplements using your phone.

Wi-Fi enabled thermostat and humidity monitor: I installed one of these about six months ago, and set it to notify me on my phone if the temperature in the fish room ever dropped below 70° or ever got above 80°. Since then, it is only happened once, and it didn’t turn out to be a big deal. However, this gives me an awful lot of peace of mind.

Wi-Fi enabled motion controllable camera: I just installed one of these a couple of weeks ago, and I absolutely love it! It has Infared, so it works even if all of the lights are off, and it any point, I can pull it up on my phone and move it around and check all of the tanks in the room. I can swivel it down using my phone to check the Floor and make sure there’s no water, etc.

Wi-Fi enabled water alarm: I haven’t purchased one of these yet, but I am planning to fairly soon. This would be a good back up, and would notify me if I accidentally left the water running and over fill the tank, or if one of my tank springs a leak, the alarm could wake me up even in the middle of the night and let me know there is a problem.

Please comment and let me know if any of you use any of these items or if you have any other items that you enjoy using!
Very cool..thanks for sharing. Not sure what all these gadgets cost separately or how many apps you are having to juggle between but an Apex can handle most of the tasks you mentioned. They aren’t cheap but it may turn out to be cheaper to use their system if you add up the cost of all your separate components and possibly simpler since you can just log in through their app. Apex plus UPS can offer a lot of automation and peace of mind. Never thought to add a camera so that’s something I’ll have to consider.

I don’t do things the expensive way. I paid less than ten bucks for each outlet and they only run on two apps which are next to each other on my phone home screen. I’m WiFi enabled running a dozen lights, half dozen wave makers and pumps, plus a camera to keep watch for a hundred bucks.
