I saw Brokeback Mtn w/ my wife and we both were rather nonplussed by the movie. I didn't think that either of the characters were sympathetic. My wife's first reaction was, "Why did they have to ruin two women's lives?"
It seems like director Ang Lee was trying too hard to make it a "***" movie. His 1993 movie The Wedding Banquet was, IMO, a much better and realistic ***-themed movie.

Fear of being identified as a homosexual
