Broke mans filter floss...

One thing I noticed about Polyfil is it can clog completely if packed too tightly but I still use it for water polishing.....

It’s no broke man’s filter, but a smart man’s filter. Frequent filter pad change will keep the water crystal clear and healthy by removing suspended matter that is also a nitrogen source. With frequent replacement, it makes economic sense to substitute poly fill or batting from craft shops that costs only a tiny fraction of original filter pads. It costs me about 25c per sq ft so it is not worth to rinse it, just trach it. It’s even cheaper than recyclable foam which only lasts 1-2 years. You can make your filter container but I bought mine from Marineland for only $3. One key consideration in DIY container is to make sure the edges are tightly seal from water by pass.

I made the threads name like that so its catchy. Yes I agree with you this works wonders. Honestly it's been two days and I can tell you how much crap is in there already getting clogged. My wife even was surprised how clean it got she thought I did a water change. My setup in my sump is I have a container already for the pre filter so all I do is slide it off and toss a new one in.

Granted I never needed this until I got so many small 1-5 inch red devils I need to sell and I have a dry spell might just go to a lfs trade up for some store credit. The thing is I have 50 more in a grow out tank so really need to get rid of these fish.My tank got a lot more bio load since these guys were added.

So I was on youtube lurking around and found someone used polyfill polyster filling for filter floss. I went to my local walmart picked some of that stuff up. I bought it last night and by morning I can tell you it made my water 50% cleaner. It wasn't crystal clear but I have OCD but it was a lot better.

Only drawback is that this stuff gets dirty quick. It doesn't matter for 10 bucks this will probably last me a year and I can discard the old one but many reuse it.

I used it in my sump as a prefilter

I am getting some of this, this weekend
