Nice river chub! (i think) i would love to build a native tank stocked with bluehead chub, river chub, redbelly dace, and madtoms. They build castles of pebbles when they spawn which would be quite entertaining.
I believe the ones I catch begun as fathead minnows so not sure what name they get once they grow into a chub. I do find em kinda neat on how they grow these bony growths on top of their heads as they turn into chubs. Usually they don't start growing untill the fish has past 4in. It was also neat how this one was in his breeding dress when I caught him, had a really nice maroon red color all up and down his underbelly. Kinda curious how big they can get and if they would taste any good cooked.

Yes if i remember correctly those are called tubercles and are found on breeding males. Theres a number of "chub" species but as you said they are just members of the minnow family.

Kinda figured it was a male since he was in his breeding dress. Kinda neat to see an other wise ugly fish turn pretty even if it is just for a short period of time.
