Broken Back Prevention with Gars!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How about people who have had gars with broken backs list what the tankmates were?

Shortnosed with Shortnosed
Shortnosed with longnosed
Shortnosed by it's self no tank mates
Shortnosed with (Fathead) Rosy minnows (go figure)
Shortnosed in a bucket by it's self (I'm still at a loss on this one)
Longnosed by it's self no tankmates
Longnosed with Central longear sunfish
Longnosed with Black bullhead
Longnosed with Shortnosed
Florida by it's self no tankmates
Florida with Florida
Florida / spotted with Shortnosed
Florida/spotted with Polypterus delhezi
Gator with Shortnosed

Thats about it for me... I generally keep these fish in species only tanks, have long ago identified this problem and always taken steps to avoid this. Being primarily a gar keeper and having not so much of an interest in "postage stamp" collections I really have not mixed these fish much.

Majority of the problems I have advised on (Hundreds by now) have involved cichlids, plecos, synodontis and Aros. to a lesser degree other large catfish species such as Ritas, RTC, channel cats, bullheads or TSN.

Thanks guys, anybody else??

bump

to the top 4 all gars!

My 2 cents..........I installed a dimmer on the lights in the room so I could bring the intensity up slowly, then hit the tank lights. I don't make and sudden movements near the tank. These things seem to work for my spotted (9"). My florida (16") doesn't get spooked, but he does like to play in the bubbles from the powerhead. It's his little dance.

Hey guys, I hate to bump up an old thread but I have had an increased intrest in gars lately and saw this thread while researching them.

Anyhow last summer I was fishing wtih a friend who is currently working on his masters in fisheries management when I caught a gar that had a broke back in the shape of a "V." He said this was common and it is due to a defficiancy in their diet. I want to say Vitamin C but I cant remember. I wonder if this is the same thing you guys are talking about.

Never heard of this Vit. C defficiany. Can your friend give a source on this? If it was a defficiany my guess would be that we would see it in a HUGE number of all fishes.
