often its a gar spooking and hitting the glass from a number of things. loud noice, sudden shake, bad tank mates(pbass, cichla, AROWANA etc)

1) yes, it will affect its growth rate..they might not grow to their maximum potential.

2) it can recover depending on the extent of the injury. mine did recover after it broke its back.
