Broken barb plz advise

I don't think it's just the sheath. From the picture it looks like that but from his description it sounds like the barb itself is detaching without having grown a new one. I had this happen when a female pearl got really beat up by a male. For a while there was no barb at all and the tail didn't look good at all. Then a kind of funky barb grew that didn't look so hot either. After that she started growing normal barbs again.

Good looking healthy ray. I bet that will heal up given a little time and all will be well.

The base of the barb will go white up to a week before the ray is about to shed its stinger. Doesn't appear to be anything to worry about.

She should be fine. Looks like the barb is still in place with the sheath ripped off. I have a few rays and while moving them to a bigger tank, the female's barb got caught in the net ripping part of the sheath. The barb ended up developing a fungal infection and I had to take the ray out of the tank and remove as much of the barb as I could. This removed the infection and she shed the stump a few weeks later. If you see what looks like cotton around the barb, then it is infected and the barb needs cut off. Until then, just keep a close eye on the barb. Either way your ray should be fine. It looks well fed and in good condition.
