I broke 4 metatarsals in my left foot (No's: 2-5) May 2003 and after 6 surgeries (bone grafts/plate extractions and debridements) I now have a permanent titanium plate and titanium screws holding my 4th metatarsal together because all the bone grafts didnt work. I am now permanently busted on ridiculous pain killers all from broken metatarsals.
So, yeah I agree they suck. A lot.
