I have a 75 gallon tank that I let set on the back porch empty in the sun. To my horror when I started cleaning it to set it up I found a stress crack in the bottom frame.

I know to glue it and bar clamp it......but im not sure what kinda glue to use.

What kind of glue would it take to repair this??????

i have the same problem on my 125 i just got but in the corner and on the top.

IDK what kind of glue you should use i would think something the would melt the plastic together like weld on. I was thinking about using a epoxy but i dont know how well that will hold to a hard plastic.

Please keep us update i am intrested in seeing how u fix it. you can order a bottem frame but thats alot of work and i think the right glue would work just as good!!

i would try plastic weld or fiberglass resin but i havent done it b4 and im no expert i think it would work tho

I think 5 minute epoxy is too brittle. I was thinking of something like model glue,weld-on,super glue perhaps.......i dont really know:nilly:

ok now theres a new problem. The bar clamps wont apply enough pressure without slipping. So i am using a rachet strap. I have insane amounts of pressure on this strap and it still wont pull the frame back together......:WTF:

Ok i am thinking about maybe leaving the strap on it........minus the board of course...lol. The bottom 2 1\2" of the tank is covered by trim on the stand anyway. And with the amount of pressure that on that thing now it should never come apart

Any Thoughts??????

weld ons work GREAT with bonding acrylic pieces- have done projects with acrylics... but actually i do have the same question for this situation as I have a cracked 30g xl tank that I have been itching to use but the frame itself is cracked on the top portion.

I do not know what the plastic is composed of

i would defiantly fix it dont just leave it. i would clamp it and use weld on i have been looking at it and it looks promising. If you decide you can get a replacement bottom for probably $30 from your local pet place. but if a $5 thing of glue fixes it...

I think I am goin to try weld on...

are you useing a 4 foot clamp? thats what i would use on the ends of the aquarium.. if its still slipping try putting the 2x4's between the clamp and the aquarium.

weld on works with lots of plastics it says so i think i am goin to try it

question... will weld on ruin my silcone

I have come to the conclusion that buying a new bottom frame for $31 bucks is alot safer than glueing it ghetto style. I dont really want to see the aftermath of 75 gallons of water hitting my floor and coming home to dead fish that I have raised for so long.

Heres the link to order frames........

There are tons of people giggling in the background that aren't going to point out the obvious. Just turn the crack to the back side and go with it. There isn't enough strength in the plastic to be considered in the structural integrity of the tank. It is used in the assembly of the tank, and there after, it is only for cosmetics.
