Broken Filter??

I'm new at this,
So I got ahold of an old Eheim 2017. I have cleaned it an when i plug it in it spins (noisily). I have tried to check and see if it would pull the water through, by siphoning the canister tank full of water and both hoses full of water but the impeller stil spins without pushing water through. When it spins it is noisy, when I had it apart the blades on the impeller looked good. What do you think is the problem? What should I try?

oh yeah, there was at least one spot in the tubing where I could hear a little air getting through; however, it didn't seem to make a difference in the pressure.
 
Is the impeller shaft worn (stainless shaft) or broken (ceramic shaft)? Is the magnet grooved or out of round?

If the impeller is broken or worn out, you're kind of out of luck. I searched EVERYWHERE for one, they've been out of production since 1998. (the 2017 went out of production in 1983, however they kept producing parts until '98)

What I did with mine was remove the impeller and cord and use it with my return pump.
 
I think the ceramic shaft may be broken. There is a small whitish shaft running through the middle and it is in two pieces. The magnet is also in two pieces. Also it looks like there is glue inside the magnet and then on the bottom like it was gluded to the dark shaft. I was also wondering if it is missing the another rubber end. In one pic I have a wisper light impeller with two rubber ends.

Mine was broken the same way, I could get it to work , but if the power went out it wouldn't start again. Unfortunately, there aren't replacement parts available. The 2117 and 2217 impellers are larger, so...

If you do find a source for 2017 impellers, let me know!
 
So what if I use some tough glue? Which parts are broken and need to be stationary? Is it just the two pieces of magnet and the Ceramic shaft? Did you try sticking them together with some heavy duty glue?
 
The part that needs to be fixed is the white ceramic shaft. It does need a bushing at both ends, but the other one may have stayed in the filter head. If the shaft fits snugly in the bottom of the hole it slides into, you're OK. If it moves around, you're missing a bushing (little black rubber thing).

You could try gluing it, but I have my doubts, there is quite a bit of vibration, and you have to remember that there was probably a reason why it broke in the first place. Sorry to be so pessimistic. :(

On the bright side, don't throw it out! If you have a decent sized powerhead or pump, you can always just use the canister part of the filter. In the picture I am running it off of my return line from my sump.

I'm not sure I understand, It does not look like you have any filter material in the canister so what is the purpose of having it in the return link? Correct me but as I understood it you really need the physical filtration at the beginning of the sump process or before it goes through the pump back to your tank right? Thanks again, I really am just figuring this all out.
