I just did a water change on my fiances 20 gallon tank and when I went to restart the filter it wouldn't work. I'm going to run to the store right now and get something else. I'm planning on getting one a little bigger then what we had. It'll be to small, but should I just put the filter pad in the new one? Anything else I should do?

So I went to pull the "broken" filter out and it started working again! Guess I can return the new one....

Smpage, they're 3 small angle fish "will be going in a larger tank soon", 4 smaller fish, don't remember what they're called, pleco, 3 tiger barbs.

This happens semi frequently with HOB's

WIth the aqua clear line sometimes you need to just flick the impellar gently.
With the aqua tech line (I use them on my 10 gallons) They usually need a magnet cleaning.

Its usually worth your while to take the filter apart somewhat with HOB's as the problem is usually easily solved.

That's kind of a pain.... Good to know though. Glad it's working again though. I was worried for a little while. The fish have been doing really good even the pleco is starting to eat algae wafers.

Yeah with HOB's most of the time the water comes in contact with the impellar first as opposed to last with a canister so they need monthly cleaning of the impellar etc in my experience.

Just the way I do it. Take the HOB off the tank ( Plop the bio media in a bucket of tank water with an airstone)

Clean the sponges / cartridges and set aside or in tank water. Run a brush through the intake. Flush out the filter under the tub water. Then I take out the impeller clean the magnet and impeller if necessary and flush their housing. Reassemble fill with tank water and fire it back up : )
You may need to do this more often or less often depending on the filters load.

Your welcome hope it helps.
