A friend of mine has a 55 gal tank that busted. the front and back panes of glass were bowed outward. The bottom pane was shattered, and the top piece of plastic that runs front to back mid tank (hood support) was cracked. The tank was set up for a long time without problems. No big rocks that could have shifted and fallen. It is a mystery. He has a thirteen year old boy that was there alone. (home from school). he said it was fine when he got home and must have busted while he was sleeping. What do you all think.

the bottom piece in most tanks is tempered.. so if the cross support was broken and the sides were bowing logic says the sides would fail before the bottom... but maybe the bowing sides were putting some twisting pressure on the bottom and fianlly gave out and poped... who knows

id blame the kid though.. even if his son didnt do it this would be a good life lesson.. always have a solid alibi.. sleeping is never good enough..

what the kid failed to mention was that he tried to climb on top of the tank lol...

LOL. I agree! That is too funny.

If it wasn't the boy, then it was probably the stand. If a stand is not supporting the center of the tank then the downward pressure could cause the sides to bow out.
