I struggle to believe I am the only one!

Although my tank had lost its plastic trim about a month before it broke. I suppose the broken trim is rare. Its my theory that glass tanks should never be allowed to sit flat on their bottom panes and that is why they all come woth that plastic frame....to keep them supported only on their edges. While I don't have much data up there, it looks like the data supports my theory.

There are tank makers that don't use a floating bottom, but rather a flat bottom where the tank is resting directly on the bottom pane. I don't think they are less strong than any other tank, but they seem to be more sensitive to any "un-flatness" in the surface of the stand. The floating bottom/plastic framed type seem to be more forgiving, as they only need to be supported around the perimeter.

had a glass tank split a seam on one of the side panels. i think it split because the tank spent about 2 months in the summer sun empty and i think the silicone dried out. don't know for sure. sold the tank about a year later after repairing it and never had any problems out of it and neither does the new owner...
