broken thermometer: serious?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Modern thermometers use dyed alcohol, the ammount is very small and not usually a problem in a tank over thirt gallons, the lead pellets are sometimes eaten and that can lead to a slow wasting of the fish, scoop them out as soon as you can. It is like the poisoning waterfowl get from eating lead shot.

I heard somewhere that there is a submersible digital thermometer, although I haven't heard any feedback about it. Hope someone here could post some info about these digital thermometers.

I have seen them but never used them, several companies make them including coralife, pentair, pinpoint, and Tom aquarium, Big Al's carries those brands.

Just use the ones you can stick on the front as a guide and buy an electronic probe which are most accurate to check if indication is too low or high.

ok, so today i did a 50% water change, plus took out al the gravel to get the lead balls out.

so, i couldnt get them ! i tried tape, a vacuum, and my hands, but i couldnt even grab those little f@kers... so then i tried a magnet off my fridge. and it worked!

so then i thought, lead can be magnetized????

anyways, got em all.

I've had thermometers broken lots of times in my aquariums. All by big rambuntious fish. No harm seem to be done by even if the mecury area and the beads spilled out. You should scoop out the gravel where the thermometer was broken to remove the glass fragments and the beads. These can be dangerous to the fish. For better help with removing any glass fragments, turn the aquarium lights out and shine a small flashlight along the gravel bed to spot any stray fragments. Just be sure not to spook your fish with the sudden light.

No, it can't. They must be iron balls. The "lead" is iron and the "mercury" is dyied alcohol. Just forget about the whole incident. You could've left the balls in the tank. I told you. And the WC was unnecessary too. Peolple who manufacture these thermometers aren't complete idiots you know.
And the glass should be OK in a couple of weeks as well.
Relax!

I have a digital thermometer that is outside my tank, with a probe at the end of a wire stuck to my inside tank wall with a succion cup. Bought this at lfs, little expensive but very nice.

Here it is:
