I hear mollies and swordtails are great for algae, nerite snails, amano shrimp, ottos, and bristle nose I KNOW are great for algae.
a 4 bulb t8 isn't that that excessive for a 55, but you probably want more plants, run the light only 6-10 hours MAX (meaning put that on a timer), have your bulbs be for planted tanks (6500K is a good range, although with 4 bulbs you can run like two 6500K and then like two plant grow bulbs or 3200K or something of the like).
